Governors

Wendell Park School currently has thirteen governors who, between them, represent the Local Education Authority (Hammersmith and Fulham), parents and carers, the staff of the school (teaching and non-teaching) and the local community. These people meet together, at least twice a term, to form the governing body.

The full list of governors for 2010/11 is as follows:

Ms Rachel Jerrome (Chair and parent governor),The Reverand David Wheeler  and Mr Andrew Baxter (community governors), Ms Polly Hicks (vice-chair and local authority governor), Mr David Millar and Mr Sola Adetuberu (appointed by the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham), Mrs Ifrah Elmi, Ms Sophie Murphy, Mr James Balkwill and Mr Henry Sainty (elected by the parents of children attending the school), Sheila Mears (Head Teacher), Mr Justin Vafadari (Deputy Head Teacher), Ms Elena Hough and Mr Tony Bailey (staff governors).

The Role of the Governing Body

The purpose of the governing body is to help the school provide the best possible education for pupils.  It has overall responsibility for managing the school. It has to ensure that the National Curriculum is taught and that there are policies for the individual subjects of the curriculum, sex education, religious education, special needs and behaviour and discipline. It is also responsible for overseeing the budget, staffing the school and dealing with disciplinary and behavioural matters.

Of course, it is not possible for governors to attend to all these matters in detail and so the day-to-day running of the school, with all the necessary organisation and planning, is done by the head teacher, Mrs Sheila Mears.

The responsibility of the governors is very general and individual governors have no power to deal with problems or complaints. If as a parent/carer you have a problem you should first talk to the class teacher concerned, or the head teacher. If you are still unhappy you should then contact the Chair of Governors at the school. If necessary, she will refer the matter either to a panel of governors or to the full governing body.
