The Curriculum

The National Curriculum forms the basis of what is learnt by the children at Wendell Park School. The eleven subjects which we are required to teach are as follows: English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History, Art. P.E, DT, PSHE and Music. In addition to this we are required to teach R.E. and have opted to follow the agreed syllabus provided by the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

We seek to ensure that there is an effective balance between these subjects and that we also take into account a number of cross curricular issues. We are committed to providing equality of opportunity for all pupils and a recognition that preparation for life in a multicultural society is relevant to all children and should permeate every aspect of the curriculum. We also seek to develop cross curricular skills such as communication skills, numeracy skills, study skills, problem solving skills, personal and social skills and information technology skills.

The curriculum is delivered through a careful forward planning of work. A half termly plan of work for each class is on display for parents in each classroom. Children are taught in a variety of situations: whole class, groups, individual support. Decisions about the type of teaching strategy to be used are based on the needs of the children and the nature of the tasks.

Homework is seen as being a fundamental way of raising the levels of achievement for children in the school. All children are encouraged to take reading books home on a regular basis.
