ENGLISH
One of the most important skills which we seek to develop in the school is literacy. We believe that children learn in different ways and that there is no single correct way of teaching reading. Therefore methods and materials are chosen which best meet the needs of individual children. If children are to develop their skills, it is vital that parents are fully involved in the learning process. Reading skills are closely linked to writing skills and these are developed side by side. As children develop their literacy skills it is not sufficient for them to merely to "know" the words but to be able to understand, discuss, reason, read hidden meanings and be competent in reading a variety of different materials.
In addition to the teaching of language skills to the children we place a strong emphasis on getting children to become active users of language. This is encouraged through developing in children an enjoyment of books, a pride in the production of their own written work and enjoyment in taking part in discussions and debates.
MATHEMATICS
We aim to encourage an interest in all aspects of mathematics and to develop a sense of curiosity, investigation and fun so that children are able to gain a broad range of skills which will enable them to solve a variety of problems. Vital to this is the acquisition of basic skills in number, measurement, geometry and algebra. We follow National Curriculum guidelines.
SCIENCE
We aim to promote positive attitudes towards science and encourage all children to see themselves a s scientists. An introduction to scientific method contributes to the intellectual development of children in all areas of the curriculum. It should encourage
curiosity, respect for the environment and the habit of thinking clearly and making close observations. Our Science policy ensures that children will cover the entire National Curriculum for Primary Science as they progress through our school. The Science Curriculum is based on the QCA Scheme of Work.
DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY
Design and Technology capability requires pupils to combine their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding in order to design and make products. All children are encouraged to design, construct and evaluate working models in accordance with National Curriculum Guidelines. We also aim to train all children in the use of computers and word processing packages. The DT Curriculum is based on the DATA scheme of work.
HISTORY
Children are provided with opportunities to develop an awareness of the past and the ways in which it is different from the present. At Key Stage One this involves studying their own lives and the histories of their families and localities. They are encouraged to develop an awareness of chronology and are introduced to a variety of information sources. At Key Stage Two children are taught about important developments in Britain's past, from Roman to Modern times and about ancient civilisations in other parts of the world. The History Curriculum is based on the QCA Scheme of Work.
GEOGRAPHY
At Key Stage One children are provided with opportunities to consider their immediate environment as well as a contrasting one. We also encourage the development of geographical skills and focus on particular universal themes. At Key Stage Two these skills and themes are further developed and children are introduced to the geography of other parts of Great Britain as well as the wider world. The Geography Curriculum is based on the QCA Scheme of Work.
ART
Children are encouraged to develop their creative, imaginative and practical skills through a balanced programme of art, craft and design activities working individually, in groups and as a whole class. They are introduced to the work of artists, craft workers and designers from a variety of cultural backgrounds and from a variety of historical periods.
Each year we hold an Arts Festival in the summer term. This has focused on themes such as International Arts, Art Past, Present and Future. During the week there is a Shakespearean production by the Year 5 class, art, dance, music workshops and an International Banquet on the Friday. We actively encourage parents to attend and take part as much as possible.
MUSIC
Children are encouraged to develop their understanding and enjoyment of music through a balanced programme of activities which provides opportunities for them to work individually, in groups and as a class and make use of information technology to create and record music. Our music curriculum aims to extend children's musical experience and knowledge and develop an appreciation of the richness of our diverse cultural heritage. Children are introduced to music in a variety of styles from different times and places, as well as through music of well known composers and performers.
The school has a well established music tradition and all children have the opportunity to take part in regular school concerts. We have a well equipped music room and a specialist music teacher who teaches recorder at Key Stage 2. Children are also able to join Choir or Recorder Group.
After School Clubs and Groups
Hammersmith and Fulham run after school music clubs at the school years 3 up to secondary school.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Our aim is to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles for all the children in the school. We also wish to develop positive attitudes towards physical activity and to ensure that the safety of children is taken into account at all times. At Key Stage One children are encouraged to pursue three areas of activity: games, gymnastics activities and dance. At Key Stage two our aim is to encourage the development of skills in six areas: games, gymnastic activities, dance, athletics activities, outdoor and adventurous activities and swimming.
Swimming is now provided as part of the PE curriculum and Children will be taken to Janet Adegoke swimming pool for a taught swimming lesson.
