Phonics Check 2017

Children at the end of Year 1 are assessed on their use of phonics.  The phonics screening check is a short and simple assessment of phonic decoding.  It consists of a list of 40 words, half real words and half non-real words, which Year 1 children read to a teacher.  This helps teachers identify children who need additional support with phonics.  Children who score above the threshold (32/40 in 2017) are considered to have passed the check.  Children who score below the threshold will repeat the phonics screening check at the end of Year 2.

Year 1 children scoring above the threshold in 2017 = 94% (National 81%)

  • the early learning goals in the specific areas of mathematics and literacy.

Good Level of Development (GLD) at the end of Reception in 2017 = 84% (National 71%)
